Looking for a fire safe data backup solution for your home?

Dave McCabe over at http://www.homeservershow.com had the opportunity to review an iosafe external USB hard-drive.

iosafe sent Dave a unit for evaluation purposes and as the drive is marketed as both Fireproof and Waterproof he decided to take up the challenge on one of these fronts by simulating a house fire and placing the hard drive enclosure into a bonfire.  Once extinguished he would then attempt to read the contents from the drive.

Dave’s review is here.  He may never be sent another evaluation unit again as companies usually want them back in one piece. The results of his test can be viewed in the following video.

In his Home Server Show podcast Dave suggests that he might test the Waterproof claim; however, he will need another evaluation unit in order to complete this test.

If you’re interested in this device more information can be found at the iosafe webpage.

So, assuming you’ve been really good at backing up your data but not so diligent at moving the backup ‘off-site’ (out of your home) this might be a good solution for you…. You have been backing up your data haven’t you?
